What is the Waipu Coastal Walkway? It is Bream Bay's signature walking track, running along the clifftops between Waipu Cove and Langs Beach, about 15 minutes from Ruakākā. Allow two to three hours return for the full track, which climbs through coastal forest onto farmland headlands with huge views to the Hen and Chicken Islands, ancient pōhutukawa and swimmable coves at either end.
The track
From the southern end of Waipu Cove the track climbs quickly out of the beach scrub and onto open headland, and the views arrive almost immediately: the full curve of Bream Bay behind you, the Hen and Chicken Islands ahead, and below, a series of rocky coves where the water shades from turquoise to deep blue. The path rolls along the cliff edge through farmland and pockets of coastal forest, ducking beneath pōhutukawa that have gripped these cliffs for centuries.
Most walkers go as far as the high point lookouts and return, a comfortable two hours, while the full run through to Langs Beach and back fills a generous half day. With two cars, the one way walk plus a swim at Langs is the connoisseur's version.
Timing and tips
December is the showstopper, when the pōhutukawa bloom turns the clifftops crimson against the blue water, but the track earns its keep year round; winter brings crystal visibility to the islands and you will often have the lookouts alone. Mornings beat afternoons for cooler climbing and calmer light.
Wear proper shoes, carry water and sun cover, and watch footing near the unfenced cliff edges, keeping children close at the lookouts. The track crosses working farmland in places, so leave gates as found and give stock space. Finish with a swim and an ice cream at Waipu Cove, which after the climbs feels thoroughly earned.
