What the tide makes possible

Ten guides to the bay’s days, each with the conditions, timing and local knowledge that make the difference.

Best on E swell, W wind

Surfing

Beach breaks the length of the bay, with the friendliest peaks in front of the surf club. Easterly swell stands the banks up; a westerly morning grooms them clean. Lessons run through summer and the lineup rarely holds more than a handful of people.

Swimming

Gently shelving sand, lifeguards on the flags through summer, and low tide pools warm enough for toddlers. Swim between the flags, keep clear of the estuary mouth, and the beach does the rest.

Fishing

Snapper off the sand at change of light, kahawai under the birds, and charters out of Marsden Cove to the Hen and Chickens when you want the serious fish. Cook named this bay for its fishing in 1769 and it still delivers.

Kayaking and paddleboarding

The estuary is the gentle option: launch as the tide floods, drift up the river past herons and rays, ride the ebb home. Calm mornings open up the bay itself for confident paddlers.

Beach walks

South towards Waipu the sand runs firm for kilometres at low tide. North, the estuary loop fills three quarters of an hour with shorebirds. Dawn belongs to whoever sets an alarm.

Dotterels and godwits on the estuary edge, pōhutukawa clifftops on the Waipu Coastal Walkway, and the staircase up Mount Manaia when the legs want a proper hill.

Cycling

Two hours either side of low tide the wet sand rides like a gravel path. Quiet back roads link Ruakākā to One Tree Point and Waipu for longer loops, bakery stop included.

With the kids

Tidal pools, flags to swim between, a playground and skate park in town, easy fishing at dusk and fish and chips on the dunes. The formula has not changed in fifty years because it works.
