What day trips can you do from Ruakākā? Within 30 to 90 minutes you can visit Whangārei's Hundertwasser Art Centre and waterfront, dive or snorkel the world renowned Poor Knights Islands from Tutukaka, explore the Waipu Caves glowworm cave for free, surf and browse at Mangawhai, or tour the Matakana wine and farmers market country.
Whangārei: art, falls and the waterfront
Thirty minutes north, Whangārei packs a satisfying city day. The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is the headline, a riot of golden domes, living roof gardens and not a straight line in the building, and the surrounding Town Basin waterfront does coffee, galleries and boardwalk strolling among the moored yachts. Claphams National Clock Museum nearby is far more entertaining than it has any right to be.
Bookend the day with nature: Whangārei Falls drops a photogenic 26 metres just out of town, the AH Reed Memorial Park canopy boardwalk walks you through the treetops among centuries old kauri, and Mount Parihaka's summit road earns you the city panorama without the climb.
The Poor Knights and the Tutukaka Coast
Jacques Cousteau rated the Poor Knights Islands among the finest dive sites on the planet, and the day trip from Tutukaka marina, 75 minutes from Ruakākā, lets you test the claim. Boats run snorkellers and divers out to the marine reserve's arches, caves and kelp forests, where subtropical currents deliver fish in densities that seem fictional; non divers can paddle through Rikoriko, one of the world's largest sea caves, by kayak. Book ahead in summer.
Add the Tutukaka Coast beaches, Matapōuri and Whale Bay especially, on the drive home and you have one of New Zealand's great days out.
Waipu Caves, Mangawhai and Matakana
Closer to home, Waipu Caves hides a glowworm grotto that rivals paid attractions and costs nothing: bring a torch and shoes that can get muddy, walk in past the limestone formations, then switch the lights off and let a galaxy of blue green stars emerge overhead. Pair it with lunch in Waipu village, whose Scottish settler story and excellent bakery both deserve attention.
South again, Mangawhai offers a surf beach, a cliff top walkway and boutique browsing, while a 60 minute run brings you to Matakana, where the famous Saturday farmers market, vineyards and sculpture trails fill a leisurely day for the food and wine minded. Every route home ends the same correct way: back over the hill to Bream Bay glowing in the evening light.
